Latin America reprices, and Iberia is the only lane going the other way

Twenty-four of our twenty-six destinations printed a higher sea 40GP this month. The two that fell are Spain and Portugal. China → Colombia rose 82.0%, Brazil and Argentina 54.2% to $8,190-$10,010, Chile and Mexico 46.0% — and six of those are real desk quotes, not extrapolations.

The distinction between a quote and an extrapolation carries this month's story, because in August we were warning about the opposite case. Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Chile and Mexico each arrived as a real desk quote this cycle — six independent readings all pointing the same way. Last month we wrote that the Pacific Alliance needed one clean month before its jump could be read as a level rather than a rebound from our own withheld July print. That month has arrived and the lane did not settle back: it rose again by roughly half as much again. Colombia at $8,190-$10,010 is a market level now, not a correction working its way through our data.

The driver is capacity rather than Latin American demand. Back-to-back typhoons left the Port of Shanghai at 4.42 days average vessel waiting time with over 2.4 million TEU disrupted across Northeast Asia, and carriers repositioned tonnage to protect mainline reliability. Where demand was weak enough to absorb the loss — Asia-Europe, now in a seventh consecutive week of falling rates — lanes held or eased. Where Q3 volumes were still moving, the tightness went into price. That is why Spain fell 19.1% and Portugal 7.0% to $4,185-$5,115 on the same board where Colombia rose 82%. For an importer running both an Iberian and a Latin American programme out of China, this is the month those two budgets stop moving together, and a blended assumption will be wrong on both. Air offers less relief than usual: Brazil at $9.60/kg and Colombia at $9.50 have narrowed the gap to ocean but not closed it, and Central America and the Caribbean are still $14.19-$14.38/kg.

Two notes on our own numbers. Peru and Bolivia print $5,811-$7,125, up 49.2%, and both are derived rather than quoted — last month we deliberately routed them away from the Pacific Alliance because those anchors were recovering from our withheld July read, and with two clean prints in hand that detour is no longer needed. The Central American and Caribbean markets on this board are likewise derived; where a destination carries no quote we say so rather than presenting a cluster average as a desk number. And the calendar outranks all of it: Mid-Autumn Festival and Golden Week fall back to back, Chinese factories stand down after roughly 20 September, and that leaves about fifteen working days to move Q4 inventory — into an origin still clearing a backlog, an active blank-sailing programme, and carriers who have just posted a 58.2% year-on-year rise in quarterly operating profit and have no reason to discount space. On a lane that just repriced 46-82%, a booking that rolls does not cost a worse rate. It costs the quarter.

Para observar no próximo mês

  • Latin America has repriced upward two months running on clean quotes. A third print tells us whether $8,190-$10,010 is the level or the top of an overshoot.
  • Spain and Portugal have decoupled from the Latin American board. Whether they keep falling once the Shanghai backlog clears is the test of how weak Asia-Europe demand really is.
  • Peru and Bolivia are back on Pacific Alliance maths after one month's detour. Their next print should track Chile closely; if it does not, the cluster needs re-cutting.
  • Air into the Caribbean and Central America is holding at $14.19-$14.38/kg while ocean rises. If ocean keeps climbing, that gap closes and air becomes a real option on lanes where it has not been one all year.
  • October's first print is the first clean read on underlying demand since July, once the Shanghai backlog and the Golden Week shutdown clear together.
