The Atlantic gives it back; air goes the other way

Mexico led the region's rise for two months and now leads its fall, down 35.4%. Twenty-three of twenty-six LATAM destinations printed lower ocean rates. But air did the opposite across the Atlantic — Brazil up 24% — while Iberia followed Europe down. The region is pricing two modes in two directions.

YouTubeJuly 2026 Freight Rates: Are You Paying Too Much? [Market Update]

The deceleration the carriers themselves flagged in July arrived in full. China → Mexico fell 35.4% to $4,500-$5,500, the sharpest drop in the region and an almost exact mirror of the 38.3% rise that made it July's headline. The deep-sea Atlantic moved as one block: Brazil and Argentina both down 26.9% to $5,310-$6,490, with Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and the Caribbean tracking the same slope. Measured from June rather than July, Brazil is 15.1% cheaper and Mexico 10.7% cheaper, so unlike Europe the Americas have cleared their early-summer base outright.

July closed on a specific re-check: the Pacific Alliance had held flat for two months on a bad data cell, and a clean Chile, Colombia and Ecuador quote was the first thing to verify. August delivered it. Chile and Colombia printed $4,500-$5,500 and Ecuador $5,490-$6,710, all structurally valid for the first time since June. The month-over-month deltas read +58.7% and +93.7%, but that is our own withheld July read arriving late, not a repricing — against the raw quotes those desks actually issued in July, the Pacific eased around 20%. The levels are now right; the deltas need one more cycle to settle.

Air is where the region separates from itself. Across the Atlantic it rose while ocean fell: Brazil +24.0% to $12.40/kg, Argentina +12.7% to the same, Chile +17.3% to $12.90, Uruguay and Paraguay both +24%, the Caribbean +12.7%. Iberia went the other way entirely — Spain −31.7% to $4.10/kg and Portugal −33.8% to $4.90, because Iberia prices with Europe, not with the Americas. When the ocean product gets slower and less certain, Atlantic shippers pay to skip it; that is what a +24% air print against a −27% ocean print means.

Para vigilar el próximo mes

  • The Atlantic has now cleared its June base. A third consecutive fall would move this from surcharge unwind to genuine demand softening on the Santos and Buenos Aires strings.
  • The Pacific Alliance needs one clean month on top of this one. Chile, Colombia and Ecuador are structurally valid again, so September prints a level rather than a rebound.
  • The air inversion is the region's real signal: Atlantic air up while ocean falls says shippers are buying certainty. If it holds a second month, ocean reliability — not ocean price — is the constraint.
  • Iberia is priced by Europe. Spain and Portugal will follow the North-European surcharge cycle, not the LATAM one, and should be quoted on that basis.

    02 · Cobertura

Lane Tracker publishes a single-forwarder benchmark. For the ~14-16 emerging-markets lanes with no public benchmark (Middle Corridor, East Africa, MENA secondary, SE Asia secondary, Caribbean), no comparable data exists publicly.

    03 · Cadencia y correcciones

Publicado mensualmente, la última semana del mes, con la metodología v1. Las correcciones materiales se registran en el changelog de la página de metodología; los snapshots de meses previos quedan congelados en sus valores publicados.
